Michelle Taylor

About Me

Curious by nature, my design process is grounded in systems thinking, designing digital products that simplify complexity, aligning user insight, technical reality, and business goals into experiences that actually work.

Michelle Taylor at Gásadalur waterfall in the Faroe Islands

I'm a builder at heart, drawn to design not because I wanted to make things pretty, but because I wanted to understand how things work. I focus on spotting what's broken and making things better through thoughtful iteration. That curiosity is what keeps me digging deeper, asking harder questions, and designing with more intention.

AI & Product Design & Development

2024 - Present

  • Stepped back after 10+ years in product design to deepen expertise in AI and how it's reshaping the craft. Solo-designed and vibe-coded multiple production apps using Claude Code; iterating in code, not just mockups, with AI as a core collaborator from problem framing through launch.
  • Developed custom internal debugging tools to validate LLM output accuracy against small datasets, ensuring high-fidelity results before scaling to production features.
  • Selected Projects
  • RoamsWild; Designed to solve the fragmentation of public-land data and user anxiety in off-grid travel, this AI-powered planner utilizes Claude and Gemini to synthesize unstructured geospatial records into high-trust trip insights. Implemented custom validation loops that gate LLM reasoning against validated land boundaries to mitigate hallucinations, paired with a multi-tier provenance system to ensure reliability in sensitive geographic contexts.
  • ClipQuery; Personal, local-first AI media search across external drives; combines CLIP image embeddings with LLaVA captioning via Ollama for fully offline indexing.
  • ReelReady; AI-assisted social media video production; automated video analysis, trending-audio research, and caption generation. Powered by Gemini and Claude Haiku.

Bolt

Sr. Product Designer

E-commerce, B2B & Consumer Platforms

Apr 2022 - Jul 2024

  • Led design for merchant onboarding and installation experiences, reducing time-to-value from weeks to days by eliminating manual implementation workflows and redefining how merchants activated products at scale. Resulted in several hundred merchant sign-ups shortly after launch.
  • Increased abandoned cart recovery rate from 6% to 13% (some up to 26%) and helped merchants recover over $18M in potentially lost revenue.
  • Partnered closely with Product and Engineering to define scope, prioritize tradeoffs, and deliver a net-new product in under 60 days as part of a company-wide initiative, balancing speed, quality, and long-term platform considerations.
  • Contributed foundational components and interaction patterns to the design system supporting both merchant and shopper experiences, improving consistency across products and accelerating future feature development.
  • Identified systemic UX friction in the merchant checkout configuration flow and influenced product strategy by shaping roadmap priorities and cross-team investment decisions.

Capital One

Principal Experience Designer

Commercial Banking Platforms

Mar 2019 - Nov 2021

  • Led design for a unified expense management platform serving commercial card administrators and cardholders, consolidating fragmented workflows and reducing manual processes across multiple products.
  • Conducted and synthesized 50+ research sessions with commercial card administrators and finance teams to uncover systemic pain points, directly informing product strategy, IA decisions, and prioritization for the next-generation Commercial Card Platform.
  • Defined and implemented a mobile design system for commercial card applications across iOS and Android, enabling consistency across teams and accelerating delivery in a highly regulated environment.
  • Established a global single sign-on vision and design strategy across commercial banking products, aligning security, compliance, and user experience requirements to support long-term platform scalability.
  • Supported and mentored designers through critique, feedback, and cross-functional collaboration.
